Two and a half years after shooting Boys Noize at Lollapalooza, I had the pleasure to get right up on stage and shoot him again as he worked up the crowd at Hollywood’s Music Box. As a surprise, rapper Kid Cudi guested on the mic for several minutes.
PHOTOGRAPHER’S NOTES: I shot a lot of photos that night. I typically make it a point to keep my frame count as low as possible — a carryover from my days of shooting film — but I went a little trigger-happy for this performance. A few reasons: One, I got to shoot the entire performance. And not only that, but from up on stage and in the wings. And Boys Noize spun a set that must have been three hours long. So, I had plenty of time and opportunity for shooting. Also, the lighting was very erratic with pulsating strobes and giant LED backdrop making it challenging to nail exposure. Lastly, for a one-man DJ/producer set, he had the entire venue worked up into a frenzy, making it difficult not to get wrapped into trying to capture every moment.
